Extended Repo! soundtrack won’t be released until Valentine’s Day

For the first time, I actually went on the Repo! chatroom today (Wednesday night), since it was announced that the director of Repo!, Darren Bousman (and actor Terrence), was going to reveal exciting news about the movie. The chatroom was at full capacity!

The Repo! message boards are down and won’t be up until Saturday. If you’re a Repo! fan and missed the chat session, I saved the complete chat log from the moment when Darren started chatting until he left. You can check it out here. There’s nothing specific about Paris Hilton or Amber Sweet, in case that’s what you’re looking for.

Well, first, the bad news: The Repo! soundtrack 2 (or the extended soundtrack), which includes an extended version of Paris Hilton’s Happiness is Not a Warm Scalpel, won’t released until around Valentine’s Day. But the good news is that more orders had to be made because more stores want it!

How many songs will be on the new soundtrack? The director said approximatively 40 songs!

The biggest news was his announcement of the Repo! road show, which is similar to the Repo! road tour, except it will be run by fans, starting with 10 cities. Fans will be able to put together a Repo! road show. He talked in detail about this new event.

In one month, a new member-only section will open on Repo!’s official site, but it will be pay site (about $25 per year). The section will be frequently updated and will include lyrics, behind the scenes pictures, unreleased songs and even deleted scenes!

Repo! is doing very well on DVD in terms of sales. He revealed that 188,000 DVD copies of Repo! were made and that about 40% of them were sold within a week.

He would like to do a Repo! 2, but it will depend on how well it does on DVD. The problem is that the movie did very poorly in theaters. The budget of the movie was $8.5 million. He remarked: “If the DVD and Blu-Ray sales hit or get close to the the film’s budget and break even, is the sequel greenlit for sure?” But he insisted that he is determined to keep the Repo! community alive and growing!

How can you say it did poorly on the theatres? I heard they got full sections. The problem is that the flick was showed in only 10 or 20 theatres.

I read the transcripts. Enkil is repeating what the director Darren bousman said. if you read the chat, he said that it didn’t do well and was perceived as a film that “tanked” That’s why he said it has to do well on DVD for a second one to get made. It only made about $250000 dollars but cost $8.5 million. He said unless it comes close to breaking even, no one will fund a second one.

It looks like it sold about 75k DVD units the first week when they had some press and momentum. Mine cost less than $20. That’s at best about $1.5 million. On amazon it’s currently about $14. They’re going to have to sell an awful lot of DVD/Blurays to have a second one.

Correct… Darren also seems very concerned about this.

It’s interesting to note that almost every Repo! road tour was sold out. In theaters, it started off well, and then, it just died. All of this with zero real promotion. Hopefully, somehow, they’ll manage to break even. It’d be very interesting to have a Repo! 2!

Well the theatrical “failure” is Lionsgate’s own fault! They didn’t make the film a wide release in the US and didn’t promote it all!

Everyone involed in the production (director, cast, etc) & the fans had real love for the film and had to do all the promoting themselves.

It might take a year or so for the film to gain some more cult status & sell more DVDs. Also, the film is yet to be released in some countries!

It is coming to Australian theatres sometime this year & is getting DVD release in the UK in March; these are big markets for cult films!

Give it time people, I have a good feeling Repo 2 will happen. 🙂

I hope it does well everywhere but if you read what Darren Bousman said, it won’t play in many overseas markets because it didn’t do well in the US. Darren seemed hopeful but skeptical at the same time that a second one could be made. Hopefully it will do well so a 2nd can be made.
