I want to do all I can to help a friend of mine from InsaneJournal. I don't want to hijack this board for a personal cause, however good my intentions, so I'll just post a little summary and let people make up their own minds to hopefully follow the link for more information.

As you know, America, while it has many wonderful citizens, has an absolutely atrocious policy to healthcare. I have a friend who is in urgent need of brain surgery but can't afford it because she is unemployed and doesn't have health cover. You can quickly and safely help my friend Erin in her attempt to raise funds by simply downloading a small virus free text file once per day. And to keep this Paris related (someone else who doesn't think people's lives or health should have a price put on it), you can see in the comments at this post a discussion I had with Erin (redscorner) where I hopefully gave her a better perspective of Paris than she had already (and she is probably the most reasonable, openminded and polite person to ever have raised an "issue" with Paris to me in any of my journals).

Feel free to spread to others if you think you can get more help and thank you to anyone who downloads the file.

How well do you know this friend? Have you meet her? I don't mind downloading the file every day. I'll do it time to time. Keep us updated. Unless if she has a major website, I hate to say it but it's practically impossible to get 5 million downloads.

This is a very difficult situation and I know she wants this to work, but I think she should try something else at the same time within her own community or family. Perhaps she could open a website and write about it. I don't know, but it's going to be tough to reach 5 million downloads.

BTW, I get so many of these letters asking for help or for money. I think some of them are real stories. I think Paris attracts a lot of these people because they think she's rich and all that and because of the comments she said. It's really an epidemic, especially in the US. It's a horrible and unimaginable situation. At least here in Canada, health care is free, but it's sort "broken" at the moment. Your friend should move here.

I dont' know her that well, but she is a journal friend whose posted about her situation quite a few times in her journal, so it's not one of those email scams asking for your bank details. She didn't specifically mention Paris, other than the unrelated discussion I on my earlier post and was unaware of all the charity work that Paris does.

It's still a long way off (others have made other suggestions too) but so far my friend has been able to get 1200 downloads in just five days from people willing to help and download daily. Thanks to anyone here who's helped so far.

Django, I'm a bit worried about your friend. I can't believe she's doing this to raise money for health care and her life. I really think she should find some other way and not 100% depend on this.

I'm worried that this particular incentive isn't going to work either, although it's been progressing in impressive leaps and bounds since it began. Other people have made other suggestions though, which Erin might be looking into. Some of us have donated to her PayPal account (although she doesn't want anyone with any doubts about her to do this and had to be persuaded to allow it).

She's keeping everyone updated via a community she created on LJ Project Download. Several mirror versions of the original download file have been created since, although sometimes Megaupload will say that all the files are "temporarily unavailable".

Apparently Erin has been getting some flak from people claiming that she's a fake, but she's not asking anyone to do anything other than download a virus free file and has answered many of the questions addressed to her in her community posts. What annoys me of course, is that anyone should have to do this just to get the healthcare that every human in a prosperous nation should be entitled to (every human should be entitled of course, but it's not as if she's living in some isolated village in a Third World country with no professional doctors). However, I can't change it, Erin can't change it, Paris can't change it and Hilary Clinton already had her shot. I guess it would take a mass movement of the American people, as the health insurance companies and their bribed socialist fearing politicians have too much control.

Just in case anyone from this forum is still downloading the files to help Erin, then don't waste your time anymore. Megaupload have revealed themselves to be the cowboy outfit that many suspected them to be. They refused to pay out money that Erin was entitled to under the rewards program and made excuses. More info is at the LiveJournal community projectdownload but the entries tend to be members only nowadays. The bottom line is that downloading the file is a waste of time for all concerned and Megaupload don't live up to their word.
